A useful fit for

Households alternating custom-length heat bags, deliberately controlled vacuum and compatible reusable zipper bags.

The main tradeoff

The body is deeper than a shallow external base. The handheld route needs mains power, and the listed starter package does not include a marinating vessel or jar-sealing kit.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I require roll storage, a cutter and manual Pulse control together?

Yes. The exact VS3130 product lists all three, including a dedicated Pulse setting.

Is the retractable valve-bag fitting cordless?

No. It remains tethered to the mains-powered base; it is not a removable rechargeable pump.

Can I require a compatible canister supplied in the box?

No. The exact starter contents list roll material and bags but no rigid canister. A Marinate setting does not supply its vessel.

The FoodSaver VS3130 Premier is a roll-equipped external sealer with more deliberate food control than a basic automatic bag machine. Its exact US package, 2159402, lists Pulse, Marinate, Moist and Dry settings, an integrated cutter and a retractable handheld fitting. That combination is useful when one household alternates between ordinary bag portions, more compressible food and valve bags that are opened repeatedly.

Pulse is a real reason to compare this model

The VS3130 product specification explicitly includes Pulse. In the US VS3000-family guide, that mode lets the user hold to vacuum and then choose when to seal. It provides a different kind of intervention from pressing an early Seal button once an automatic cycle has already started. You still need to watch the food and prepare it appropriately; a control cannot guarantee that every soft or airy item keeps its shape.

If you rarely pack anything delicate, that extra mode may matter less than your preferred lid mechanism. The V4440 concentrates on automatic bag sensing, while the FM2000 keeps the controls and body shallower. The VS3130 makes a stronger case when selectable vacuum handling is something you expect to use rather than a feature you may never touch.

A roll station with a different rhythm from precut bags

The internal roll area and cutter keep custom-length bag supplies together. The bag-making routine prepares the next end seal while the current bag is cut away. This is useful if your portions vary in length, because the machine does not force every piece into a standard precut size. It also requires learning which sealed end belongs to the next bag before starting a longer session.

For the filled bag, the machine uses a latch-and-button workflow. The family guide describes Open, Operate and a middle Store position, with the bag opening placed in the vacuum channel before closing and selecting the cycle. Keep clear material above the food and flatten it before closing. An alignment tool and angled opening help establish a loading position; they do not remove the need to keep crumbs, folds and moisture away from the seal area.

Allow space for the appliance and the portion

FoodSaver specifies a closed body 16.2 inches wide, 8.4 inches deep and 5.9 inches high. Compared with a shallow external base, that depth is worth checking on a narrow worktop. Leave access to the lid and cutter as well as flat space in front to support the filled bag. A machine fitting on a shelf does not mean the same shelf makes a convenient packing station.

The current package lists an 11-inch by 8-foot roll and three quart heat-seal bags. It also lists two quart and three gallon zipper bags for the handheld route. No rigid marinating container or jar-sealing kit appears in that package list. Check that distinction if a photograph or a description of accessories makes the box sound more complete than the supplied-equipment list.

The handheld fitting remains part of the powered base

Pulling out the retractable fitting gives access to compatible bag valves beside the appliance. It does not create a cordless pump: the fitting remains connected to the electrical base. Close the zipper completely and keep food away from its valve. Follow the bag's storage labeling; the VS3130 description assigns the handheld route to refrigerator and pantry storage, while its heat-bag route is the freezer-oriented option.

Marinate is a separate accessory routine requiring a compatible container. Having a Marinate setting does not supply that container, and a jar accessory does not turn vacuum packing into canning. If independent cordless use is central to the purchase, compare the detachable pump on the Handheld+ rather than treating all products described as handheld the same way.

Keep the workflow and cleaning manageable

The US VS3000-family guide calls for 20 seconds of cooling after use. It also explains the removable drip tray, gasket cleaning and using Store after the dry machine is put away. The current VS3130 product page confirms the removable tray; follow the instructions supplied with your particular unit for removing and refitting parts. Its linked newer manual download was unavailable when checked, so confirm that document with FoodSaver if the carton lacks it.

Choose the VS3130 when Pulse, selectable moist-food handling and integrated roll preparation justify the deeper body. Choose a simpler base if most portions go into precut bags, or the NESCO VS-12P when comparing an alternative with explicit Pulse control. For unfrozen soup, investigate a documented liquid-packing setup instead of assuming the VS3130's Moist setting provides that capability.
